Just as the sporting world is hit recently by the death of two football icons – Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer, the two men who won World Cup as players and coaches – another iconic figure has sounded a note of an imminent exit from this planet.

He is the former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson who was almost clinching the Super Eagles job 14 years ago to guide the team to the 2010 World Cup.

The Swede was in Nigeria and was almost guaranteed the job until he was upstaged by his compatriot, Lars Lagerbäck.

The man who stepped down from from his role at Swedish club Karlstad due to “health issues” now says he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has a year to live in a “best-case scenario”.
