As at Monday night, perhaps the most shock-laden night in the 67-year history of the Africa Cup of Nations, 78 goals had been scored in the current edition.
Equatorial Guinea as a team and their player, Emilio Nsue are the unlikely heroes of the Africa Cup of Nations as the group stage of the tournament is winding down.
Currently ranked 88th in the world and 18th in Africa, Equatorial Guinea has been the surprise of the tournament.
In three group matches, the team making its fifth appearance in the competition has scored nine goals. It is the highest by any low ranked team.
Not only that, their captain, Emilio Nsue, a 34-year-old right back of Spanish third Division side who switched to an attacking role at the AFCON is surprisingly the lead scorer so far. He leads with five goals
He is followed by the duo of Algeria’s Baghdad Bounedjah and Egypt’s Mostafa Mohamed who each have three goals.
