Morocco, the 1976 champions will face South Africa, the 1996 winners while current champions, Senegal will face hosts and two-time winners, Cote d’Ivoire. Record holders, Egypt will face the 1972 winners, Congo.
The other fixtures not pairing past winners are the Cape Verde versus Mauritania, Equatorial Guinea versus Guinea, Angola versus Namibia and Mali versus Burkina Faso.
After analysing the state of the 16 team, reputable international news agency, the Agence France-Presse (AFP) has picked the eight team that will likely make it to the quarter-finals.
The agency picked Nigeria to overcome Cameroon in the second of the eight-match series. The first match pitches Angola against Namibia. Angola is the pick to win.
Sunday’s fixtures begin with the Guinea derby as upset-creating Equatorial Guinea face Guinea. The latter is the pick to win.
In the second match of Sunday, Egypt face the 1972 winners, Congo. AFP has picked Egypt to win.
On Monday when Cape Verde face Mauritania, AFP believes that upset-creating Cape Verde Islands nation will prevail. Champions, Senegal are the easy pick to win their match against hosts, Cote d’Ivoire.
The last sets of Round of 16 duels will be on Tuesday. Mali are the favourites to overcome Burkina Faso while Morocco is tipped to beat South Africa.
