For the first time in their history, the Spain national team has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup after a comprehensive 5-1 defeat of Switzerland early Saturday morning (Nigeria time).

Great thanks to Nigeria’s Asisat Oshola’s mates in FC Barcelona. Aitana Bonmati, a midfielder with FC Barcelona which Oshoala plays for, scored two of the five goal. Another clubmate,  Laia Codina also scored in what became the most goal-laden round of 16 match in the Women’s World Cup history.

In fact, all the six goals of the match were scored by the Spanish as the only goal for Switzerland was an own-goal by Spain’s Laia Cordina who later atoned for her sin by scoring for her side.

Her own goal was the seventh recorded in the competition.

Spain will now move to Wellington, awaiting the winners of the Netherlands versus South Africa match.
