It was twists and turns and eventually a fight-back that paid off. Rivers United came from a goal down against Ghana’s Dreams FC to navigate their ways into the Confederation Cup quarter-finals after securing a late 2-1 win.
Initially needing a 2-0 margin win to have arithmetical chance of advancing as they were third on the log. Tunisia’s Club Africain were expected to continue the pounding of the Group C punching bag, Academica of Angola which hitherto had no point.
Suddenly in the 40th minute, Ghana’s Dream FC went ahead in Uyo when Abdul Aziz Issha found the net against Rivers United.
To further compound Rivers United’s momentary woes, Nigerian born Kingsley Eduwo shot Club Africain of Tunisia up in Tunisia in the home duel against the group’s punching bag.
Back to Uyo, Rivers United fought back to equalise in the 61st minute through Echeta Deputy and put scores at 1-1.
At that moment, Rivers were still arithmetically out of the cut off as they remained glued to the third position.
Then came a glitter of hope from Tunisia when unexpectedly, Angola’s Academica fought back and equalised in the 79th minute through Samuel Cachimbombo.
That served as tonic for Rivers United who got a winner in the 10th minute of added time to the regulation time through Kazie Goodwill.
Rivers then tied on points at 12 with Ghana’s Dreams FC, but the Ghanaian sides have a better goal difference.
